A good description of Band Day from the Tuba guys from their Umass web site ….

The 24th Annual Band Day was a dandy, as always. The day started for the tubas at the crack of dawn, or rather before that. Reporting time for the tubas was a bright and early 6:15am at Grinnell. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, I LOVE BEING A TUBA. We had a lot of fun greeting the high school buses as the kids arrived. The marching band enthusiasm was electric.

The Band Day show consisted of a medley from the movie, Shrek. Tunes included All- Star, Hallelujah, YMCA, Do You Really Want to Hurt Me (who wants to hurt a tuba?), Who Let the Dogs Out, Happy Together and I’m a Believer. Two of our amazing field staff, John and Phil, fulfilled every mother’s dreams for their kids as hey had vocal solos on UMass Band Day. Their vocal solo: the dog barks in Who Let he Dogs Out. In just two hours, Mr. Parks taught the entire show (music, drill nd two choreographed dance numbers) to the 3,500 member band day band. The alftime show received a standing ovation from everyone in the crowd and we eceived many compliments as we returned to our seats.

As part of the Band Day estivities, we also honored Mr. Darcy Davis by awarding him the UMMB Lifetime chievement Award and made him an honorary band director of the UMMB. Mr. Dvis started as the and director at Agawam H.S. in 1955 and his career panned over 35 years in Agawam. He influenced thousands of students and teachers uring his time. The Springfield Republican Newspaper made a video bout Band Day. Click HERE to view the video. Click HERE to read the article.
In addition to the Republican, North Andover H.S. posted two excellent videos o its web site (click HERE to view them.) The first video includes Behind the Scenes spects of the show, while the second video is the entire halftime performance. uring the postgame show, the high school students quite possibly set the McGuirk Stadium ecord for the loudest Go UMass chant.

Great job guys! It was also awesome to see he amount of UMMB alumni who brought their own bands to Band Day as band irectors. Not only were the high school bands great, but so was the football eam. Liam Coen passed (pun intended) the 10,000 yard mark in career passing ards and tied a school record with five touchdown passes in the game as the inutemen easily defeated the Bryant Bulldogs, 42-7. Also uring the game, the Mass Alumni Association presented Mr. Parks with a $30,000 check for the new and building. Now only if they can donate $110 to the tuba section so we can uy ourselves an Aircraft Carrier from Wings…
